Hudson Valley Garden Fair

Hudson Valley Garden Association presents their annual fundraising event, Hudson Valley Garden Fair, on Saturday, May 3, from 10am-4pm at Montgomery Place in Red Hook.

Featuring over 30 local and specialty garden vendors and organizations, lecture program, educational demonstrations and guided tours, Hudson Valley Garden Fair is a one day celebration of gardening in the Hudson Valley, aiming to inspire and excite gardeners of all experience levels, from beginner to expert.

“Hudson Valley Garden Fair brings attention to the wealth of gardening experiences available in the Hudson Valley by gathering everyone together in recognition of our thriving garden community of people, plants, places and knowledge,“ said HVGA co-founder, Rebecca Glembocki.

Garden vendors will sell plants and garden wares of all kinds. From Shoving Leopard Farm, which grows vegetables and flowers down the road from Montgomery Place, to Black Meadow Flora, an Orange County orchid grower. Organic vegetable seedlings will be available from Midsummer Farm and Greene Bee Greenhouse. Area landscape professionals Bloom Fine Gardening and Hilary Finn Gardens will be on hand along with local seed heroes Hudson Valley Seed Library. From nearby Connecticut is fair newcomer Something to Crow About Dahlias and plant collector favorite, Broken Arrow Nursery who will be selling unusual trees, shrubs and perennials.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with and learn about the many local garden organizations and public gardens in the area like F.W. Vanderbilt Garden Association, Harvest Hudson Valley - Red Hook’s school garden program, Mid-Hudson Orchid Society, Mountain Top Arboretum, Beatrix Farrand Garden Association and Hyde Park Community Garden.

Presenting a lecture on her newly released book, “Heaven is a Garden - Designing Serene Outdoor Spaces for Inspiration and Reflection,” is landscape designer, Jan Johnsen. Her presentation, followed by book signing, features stunning gardens, and demonstrates how you can create a place of peace and contemplation with a few well-considered additions to the garden.

Montgomery Place, a 380-acre historic river estate, provides a beautiful and educational setting for the event. Best known as a landscape influenced by the Hudson Valley’s Andrew Jackson Downing and an architectural landmark designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, it is the totality of the estate – house, gardens, arboretum, woodlands, orchards, and nature trails – that make it a unique American treasure. Robert Toole, author of “Landscape Gardens on the Hudson - A History” will give historic landscape tours and garden designer, Sarah F. Price, will give guided tours of the gardens. Mansion tours are $10 at tour entry, with proceeds to benefit Montgomery Place.

The Demonstration Tent features an ongoing schedule of 20 minute “mini-classes” from area experts on a variety of subjects including Home Composting with CCE Dutchess Master Gardeners, Edible Hanging Baskets with Pondside Nursery and Seed Saving with Pine Plains Seed Library.

Hudson Valley Garden Fair is a fundraiser produced by Hudson Valley Garden Association, a regional garden organization founded in 2012 by area gardeners Laura Wilson and Rebecca Glembocki of Wallkill. HVGA’s mission is to encourage and inspire gardeners through educational gardening programs and special events. They’re committed to assisting in the success and growth of public gardens, garden organizations and local garden businesses in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

Advanced tickets are available online now thru May 1st. Event admission is $9 in advance, $12 day of event (15 and under are free). Lecture is not included in admission, and pre-registration is advised, as seats are limited. Lecture with admission is $24 in advance, $30 day of event. Rain or shine.
